The Best Time
to Visit St Barth

Month-by-month guide to visiting Saint Barthélemy: weather, peak season, shoulder season, holiday weeks, hurricane window, and when to book.

The best time to visit St Barth depends on what you want from the trip. Saint Barthélemy is enjoyable year-round, but the island has a clearly defined peak season from mid-December through April, a quieter shoulder season in May, June, and November, and a true off-season from late August through October when many restaurants and hotels close. This guide breaks down each month with the trade-offs.

Peak season: mid-December to April

Peak season runs from mid-December through April. Weather is at its best: warm (low to mid 80s °F / 27-29 °C), dry, with steady trade winds. The water is warm and clear. Every restaurant, every hotel, and every villa is operating. The harbor in Gustavia fills with superyachts. Restaurants book out weeks ahead, helicopters operate at full schedule, and prices are at their annual peak. This is the time to come for the full St Barth experience.

Shoulder season: May, June, and November

Shoulder season offers the best value combined with still-excellent weather. May is reliably warm and dry. June starts to feel hotter and a bit more humid. November sits at the front edge of the season as restaurants reopen and rates climb back toward peak. Many guests prefer the shoulder months for the much quieter scene: shorter waits, easier reservations, and significantly better villa pricing.

Off-season: late August to October

Late August through October is hurricane season in the broader Caribbean. St Barth is rarely directly affected, but the risk window is real, and many businesses close: restaurants, some hotels, smaller boutiques. Flights and helicopter schedules thin out. For guests willing to accept the closures and the small but non-zero weather risk, October offers warm water, low rates, and an unusually empty island. September is the deepest part of the off-season.

Month-by-month breakdown

December

Early December is still building toward peak season. Mid-December onward is full peak. Christmas week is one of the busiest periods of the year, with the most-requested villas booked 12 months ahead.

January

The first week is the absolute peak (NYE through January 5). After that, January settles into peak-season pace: full restaurants, full hotels, dry warm days. A great month if you can avoid the NYE rush itself.

February

Often the most stable month of the year. Reliably warm, dry, with steady trade winds. Carnival usually falls in February or early March, which adds local festivities. The kite surfing scene is at its strongest.

March

March is excellent. Weather is consistently warm and dry. The Bucket Regatta (a major sailing event) runs in March, which fills the harbor with classic yachts. Restaurant programming is full, and the Easter window can spike demand.

April

The end of peak season. Easter week is busy, then the island gradually thins out toward late April. Weather is excellent. Late April is one of the best value windows still inside peak season.

May

Start of shoulder season. Warm, mostly dry, much quieter. Most restaurants and hotels are still open. Villa rates drop noticeably. A favorite month for guests who want the island without the peak-season crowd.

June

Hot and starting to feel humid by month-end. The classic "low-key beach week" month. The water is warm, the beaches are nearly empty, and a few key restaurants close mid-month.

July and August (early-to-mid)

Hot and humid. The Caribbean Heineken Regatta and other summer events bring some local activity. Many guests visit in early August (the French summer holiday) for a different kind of trip: hotter weather, family-oriented, more island life.

Late August, September, October

The deepest part of the off-season. Most top restaurants close (some reopen mid-October). Hurricane risk is real. Hotels are thin. For guests with strong tolerance for low season, this is when the island is at its most relaxed.

November

The island is reopening. Restaurants come back online over the first three weeks. By Thanksgiving, almost everything is operating again. Rates are still well below peak. A strong choice for a quiet trip with good weather.

Weather year-round

St Barth has consistent tropical weather with two main patterns:

Sea temperature stays between 78°F (26°C) and 82°F (28°C) year-round, swimmable in any month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit St Barth?

February and March are widely considered the most reliable months: warm, dry, and with the full peak-season offering of restaurants, hotels, and activities. December and January are equally pleasant but include the most-crowded weeks of the year.

When is hurricane season in St Barth?

Officially June through November, but the highest-risk window is mid-August through October. St Barth is rarely directly affected by major storms, but the risk is non-zero. September is statistically the deepest part of the season.

Is St Barth open in summer?

Partially. Many restaurants and some hotels close from late August through October. June and early August are still active enough that most guests have a full experience. Late August through mid-October is the slowest period.

When is the cheapest time to visit St Barth?

September and October offer the lowest rates, but with significant trade-offs (closures, weather risk). May, June, and November offer much better balance: significantly lower rates than peak season, with most venues open and weather still excellent.

Is it worth visiting St Barth in November?

Yes. By mid-to-late November, almost everything is open. The weather is good, the crowds are still light, and rates are below peak season. November is one of the strongest shoulder-season months.

Should I avoid the holiday weeks?

Only if you want a quieter trip. The week between Christmas and New Year is the busiest of the year, with full restaurants, full villas, premium pricing, and a high-energy scene. For guests who want the social calendar of St Barth at its peak, this is the time. For guests who want quieter, choose mid-January or February instead.
